Joost bows to YouTube
Joost, the third major creation by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis,
the duo that also founded Kazaa and Skype, announced Tuesday that it
will dump its consumer-video service and will now focus on building
"white label" video platforms for "cable and satellite providers,
broadcasters and video aggregators." The move marks the end of Joost
as a YouTube and Hulu competitor and also closes the book on the
attempt to resuscitate the company overseen by former Cisco executive
Mike Volpi. Joost announced that Volpi has stepped aside as CEO but
will remain chairman.

YouTube's worst comments blocked by filter
Internet users frustrated by the inanity of many You Tube comments are
celebrating a new piece of software that blocks rude and illiterate
posts. YouTube Comment Snob automatically hides any comments posted on
the video-sharing website that fail to meet a range of good English
guidelines. The filter can be set to hide comments with misspelled
words, swearing and excessive punctuation. Comments that do not begin
with a capital letter, or which are composed entirely of capital
letters, can also be blocked.

You Tube star Michael Buckley signed by HBO
Michael Buckley, the host of popular You Tube show "What the Buck?"
has signed a deal with HBO. For those not familiar with the show, Buck
delivers a regular dose of celebrity gossip and opinion in a highly
energized fashion. The show is an acquired taste, but that hasn't
stopped 250-500,000 people watching every episode.

You Tube loses Telecinco case
Spanish broadcaster Telecinco has won a lawsuit it filed against You
Tube, accusing the video-sharing site of violating its intellectual
property rights. Telecinco, controlled by Italian broadcaster Mediaset
and owned by Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, said in a
statement that Madrid's commercial court had ordered Google-owned
YouTube to stop broadcasting content belonging to the channel. While
no financial penalties appear to have been issued, the ruling could
prove costly for YouTube if it ends up influencing the company's
ongoing legal battles with TF1 and Viacom.
